Whan I was a little girl, my favorite song was “You Are My Sunshine.” I sang it non-stop, so I doubt that it was the favorite of those around me, but it was such a cheerful song I couldn’t help but be happy when I heard it.

“My only sunshine.” Right now, in the middle of this Massachusetts winter,  sunshine is streamimg in. It is catching on the dust motes circulating in the air, so if you squint it doesn’t look too messy in here; it looks almost magical. The room is so warm I am tempted to open the window and let some of the air from outside clear out some of the winter staleness.

“You make me happy when skies are grey.” It’s at this time of year that being called “Sunshine” feels like the highest compliment that can be paid. What an incredible comparison- to be the source of light and warmth, the shadow chaser. And it’s funny how just a little sunshine can go a long way toward making you feel happier.

“You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you.” Got me thinking that how you perceive things is the key. I know that I have difficulty remembering that things come in cycles- the real estate market thing has been driven home, thank you very much- but you have days you wake up, and it’s cloudy, or you just don’t feel happy. When you are there, you feel like the sun is never going to come out, you are never going to feel light-hearted again. But you do. And a little sunshine can go a long way toward making that happen.

“Please don’t take my sunshine away.”
