The watchful eye of One-Eyed Jack
The Story of One-Eyed Jack- continued from previous post
[Must be recited or read in a hoarse whisper, preferably in the twilight]
Arrrrrrh. One-Eyed Jack was the meanest pirate captain that ever sailed the seven seas. He was bloodthirsty and fierce, and plundered and amassed a huge amount of treasure. Finally he had so much treasure that he had to find some place to bury it, and he chose Purgatory Chasm. He took two of his strongest underlings and had them carry the chest through the woods, down the rocks…and to this very spot. At this point, as they were standing there holding the treasure chest, he slipped behind each and ran a dagger through him, for he feared them returning and stealing the treasure.
He went into the cave and buried the treasure deep- right in there- in the back of that cave. He placed the bodies of the pirated that he had slain on top. Because of the violent manner by which they had departed this life, he knew their spirits would remain in this spot and rise if disturbed, thus being one more defense against any who wished to plunder the treasure.
By now, it was getting cold and dark. He looked down at the disturbed earth, home to his treasure and grave to two of his friend who were now doomed to guard the booty until his return. He was nearly satisfied with his work. There was only one thing left to do.
I know you are wondering what there could possibly be left to do. The treasure is buried, the ghosts of his friends are watching it. But this isn’t just the story of One-Eyed Jack. It is also the story of how he got his name.
With a howl that sent dogs running for the shelter of their homes a mile away, he tore his eye from his head, and set it on a boulder that he had pushed over the grave. That is what you see glowing in the back of the cave, and it is watching to see that no one tries to take that treasure before Jack returns.
Let’s head back.
