Lipstick kiss
There are probably a hundred reasons for not encouraging my daughter Becca to go wilding with her old crew. The topper was when she and her best friend Courtney forgot to put gas into the car, and ended up at another friend’s house at some ungodly hour getting my tank refilled from a plastic five-gallon can.
This morning I accompanied Rebecca into the surgical area to have her wisdom teeth removed. This was not a difficult operation- but it was under major anesthesia- always troubling to the parent waiting, awake. They started her IV, gave her some medication to make her “mellow,” told me to give her a kiss prior to my being shooed out to the waiting room. I gave her the kiss, and was met with the requisite “How embarrassing!”
But really. What a necessary kiss. When you get right down to it, I likely should have also kissed her before she drove 65 mph on the highway- with Courtney, instead of God, as her copilot.
And I was wondering which is the biggest motivator, love or the fear of mortification. Maybe it’s that embarrassment wins in the short term, bridging moment to moment, but love, in its patience, really does conquer all .
