I was always the awkward one in school- like in the Ting Ting’s song, I was always “the last chick standing up against the wall.”
So, good enough. Lately, though, I have been feeling more in the loop. I mean, after all, I AM on twitter and have that information live-streaming at me day and night.
What a surprise when I happened upon Google’s Hot Trends. Not one mention of #1stdraftmovielines (mine: ET tweet home), any of the RE BarCamps, or Big Hair Thursdays. I DID know that Harry Potter was trending, and knew LaToya Jackson had been interviewed. But the tony romo and jessica simpson break up ? Sorry, I didn’t even know that they were breaking up. And sensai cleanser is an apparently “on fire” topic:

Sensai Cleanser
There didn’t appear to be much cross-over between twitter trending topics and Google’s, so I decided I had better peruse the Google list in case I was stuck in an elevator again and at a loss for conversational topics. I was doing okay when the outrage meter picked up this : tattoo barbie.
WTH? At the risk of alienating the 7% of the population that I haven’t yet offended, I have never been a Barbie fan. When she said, “Math is hard!”, her skinny plastic ass was banned from my house- I just didn’t want her near my children, male or female.
It wasn’t like I was surprised that Barbie had jumped on the ink bandwagon. And I don’t have anything against tattoos on general principles- my daughter has a largish one that she designed herself using a Picasso drawing as the jumping-off point.
But really:
So the way I see it is this. I think I will leave the trends outside of my chosen arena where I found them- outside. I spend enough time being angry.
And I think I need Miley Cyrus to endorse my blog. Hey, Miley, do a sister a favor, will you?

Trends….you do not seem the follow type…more like ahead of the curve. Nothing against trends and pop culture and all that “celeb news of the minute” but, if you have a life, what does it matter what a cowboy QB is/was doing with some singer/actress? (Now if you want to discuss Lance vs Alberto, that’s a whole ‘nother discussion). Just some thoughts from the playground between my ears. peace – btw, love your new format.

I can’t keep up with that stuff anyway.
Hey, your playground sounds as noisy as mine does! I am having so much fun fooling with these WordPress themes. Funny that we both started playing at the same time: http://www.mynapervillehomesblog.com/

Diane this is your most unusual post, but you did it well! The eternal search for what’s trending and cross checking between other trending sites online can be very helpful. Sometimes in Twitter we are so compartmentalized from the rest of the main stream that we miss out on a good trend from jumping into the fast moving stream and enjoying the ride.
I never thought I’d see a plasic “Barbie” with a tatoo. The toy makers are going with the trend without thought as to the effect it’ll have upon the children. It’s one thing to have an adult child getting a tatoo, but could you imagine letting your six year old know that she’s to young to get a tatoo. It’s to young to start that argument. :))
By the way thanks for linking Tony’s blog in the above comment. It’s off topic – Just shoot me or scrap the comment! But I commented on your Twitter post it’s nicely done! When you are done reading and commenting on Diane’s go to Tony’s in the above comment and check it out for a great read!

I was just kind of blown away by what I didn’t recognize- I guess that was what prompted the post. I just didn’t realize how isolated I am, even though I feel like I am in the middle of things all day long.
Barbie- I can’t decide if she is point-man for society, or just symbolic. Either way, I don’t like what she represents. That said, my oldest daughter’s kindergarten birthday party included the entire female element of her class (mainly because we “owed,” not because I am an incredible mom) and EVERY ONE brought a Barbie as a gift. She had never had one, and was very polite. They all played very nicely with the dolls and the attendant equipment (all pink) and I didn’t confiscate them after the party but I explained to her my feelings about Barbie. You can’t look at raising children as some sort of social experiment, I think, because you do them a disservice.
Is there such a thing as “off-topic”? Some of the most interesting things I have ever read have been hijacked commentary. Go to town!
I am trying to figure out how to set up a guest blog page for people who have more to say than can fit in a comment.

Always thought Barbie was a tramp and Ken was a jerk. And now it’s confirmed. And I guess that, at the ripe old age of almost 54, I’m too old to have heard of a “tramp stamp”. (Not that I haven’t seen several.) Still trying to figure out why people would put “art” not worthy of hanging on their living room walls permanently on their bodies.
Thanks for the laugh: at Barbie and at myself.

I just know that if I had been chosen a tattoo when I was 20, it would have been of a wizard or a unicorn, and I was absolutely certain that I would be enthralled with them forever. Why would I assume anything different about my tastes now? Very few things are forever!

Does she come with a Harley or what changes did Ken make to tag along with this new trend? Surely he must have conformed to her hot new look. He probably is home doing her math homework right now.
After the good morning show and the new “suckling” doll with fake pasties for the 6 y/o “mommy”,.. I have now declared no more toys for Christmas….

Some of the toys are crazy.
