Yesterday was a great day.

It started out a little tricky – I was supposed to present with Lesley Lambert at Inman’s Agent Reboot Boston at 9:30, and check in 15 minutes prior to that. I had planned on leaving Shirley at 6:45 on the train, picking up the subway to Hynes Convention Center, which would have allowed plenty of time to get there early and socialize.

So much for planning. At nearly 7:00, the sign at the train station flashed a statement that the train was broken down, and delays of 45 minutes were expected. Plan B: driving to Cambridge and parking at the Alewife, then heading in from there on the subway. Got there with 10 minutes to spare.

After that things went great. We presented the slideshow below, and Lesley presented another session about Reputation Management and interviewed Sherry Chris about the topic for a broker’s perspective. You can see that slideshow here.

There were some other great presentations. Daniel Rothamel spoke about bringing passion to what you do, that it is not so much about “raising the bar” in real estate that will change the public’s perception of real estate professionals. He pointed out that attorneys showed up in those same top 10 most disliked professionals lists, and the education and experience bars are pretty high in that field. The difference between the top 5 most revered professions and the bottom 5 is compassion – those in the top 10 are perceived to be caring, of service to others.

Read Daniel’s post about the subject here. Make sure you read the comments.

Sherry Chris from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate talked about how consumers expect to be interacted with. This is a huge piece of the puzzle. It is so important to understand what potential clients expect, because the client is the one driving this real estate bus. Clients are looking less at the individual property and more at the lifestyle that the neighborhood and surrounding area offers, and this is how they are searching for property. As Sherry said, the days of a client walking into the real estate office and being told, “Here are the 5 properties that match your criteria” by the agent are over.

You can read an interview in which Sherry discusses some of these things here.

And I loved the WordPress presentation – I think a blogging platform is the way to go in real estate.

The best thing? Connecting with other professionals who share the same interests. My broker Gerry Bourgeois was there, and we got to hang out with Darlene Sodano from the Townsend area, Jim Lee and Ann Cummings from Portsmouth NH, and Darlene, Daniel, Gerry and I went to the Top of the Hub afterward. Beautiful views of the city were the backdrop for a fantastic real estate discussion. I love the presentations, but the best ideas are formed when people get together in the hallways and restaurants afterward.

Also, had a great time chatting with the RLS2000 guys!
